7 ways to get more listeners

Radio guide · 5 min read · updated October 22, 2026

A good stream is only the beginning. Most internet radio stations don't grow through one big campaign, but through lots of small things that give listeners a reason to come back. Here are seven ways that work in practice.

1. Be predictable

People build habits around fixed times. A breakfast show that starts at 7 every weekday, or a request hour on Friday night, becomes an appointment after a few weeks. Publish your schedule and stick to it.

2. Let listeners take part

A listener who sent in a request keeps listening until their song comes up. Song requests, a guestbook and shout-outs read by the DJ turn listeners into participants. Mention names on air: people share that.

3. Make listening as easy as possible

Every extra click loses listeners. Put a player on your website that starts right away, offer an app people can add to their home screen, and make sure your station can be found on smart speakers.

4. Show who is live

A face attracts more than a logo. Show the DJ who is live right now with a photo, or switch on a studio cam during special broadcasts. Listeners feel more connected to your station that way.

5. Be visible where people search

List your station on radio guides and directories such as StreamTop. Fill in everything: genre, location, a good description and a logo. The more complete your profile, the more often you are found.

Tip: ask your regular listeners to vote for your station once a day. A higher place in the chart brings in new listeners who did not know you yet.

6. Use social media wisely

Just posting "listen now!" rarely works. Share short clips from the studio, a fun listener reaction or a preview of tonight's show instead. Post it just before the broadcast so people click through straight away.

7. Look at your numbers

Statistics show what works. Which hours have the most listeners? Which DJ keeps people listening longest? Where do new listeners come from? Use those insights to adjust your schedule, and celebrate milestones together with your listeners.
